Gordon's Wild Cat

Gordon’s wild cat, also called Arabian sand cat, is a rare and fascinating subspecies of sand cat, perfectly adapted to life in the arid deserts of the Arabian Peninsula. This small discreet feline lives mainly in dunes and rocky areas, where it blends perfectly into its environment thanks to its sandy coat.

Gordon's Wild Cat
Scientific name Felis lybica
Habitat Deserts

Habitat and distribution

It measures approximately 40 to 50 cm long, not counting a tail of 25 to 35 cm, and weighs between 1.5 and 3.5 kg. Its compact body is covered with short and dense fur, of a light beige hue with darker stripes on the legs and tail. Its large triangular ears, very visible, allow it to dissipate heat and detect the slightest sounds in the silent vastness of the desert. The pads of its feet are covered with thick fur to protect its feet from the extreme temperatures of the burning sand.

Diet

Nocturnal and solitary, this cat spends the day sheltered in burrows or crevices to escape the oppressive heat, only coming out at nightfall to hunt. Its diet consists of small rodents, reptiles, insects and sometimes birds. It is capable of surviving without water for long periods, obtaining the necessary moisture from its prey.

Habitat and distribution

This feline is extremely difficult to observe in the wild due to its discreet behavior and small population numbers. The destruction of its habitat, climate change and the reduction of prey populations pose serious threats to this subspecies.
