Brown bears

The brown bear is one of the largest terrestrial mammals in Eurasia and North America. Powerful and impressive, this emblematic animal of temperate forests fascinates as much by its strength as by its ability to adapt to highly varied environments.

Forest mammal

The brown bear is one of the largest terrestrial carnivorous mammals in Eurasia and North America. Present in many temperate regions, from the forests of Europe to the mountains of Asia and America, it is particularly well adapted to a wide variety of climates. Thanks to its dense fur and protective fat layer, it easily withstands harsh winters such as those found in Seine-et-Marne, where natural conditions suit it perfectly.

A massive silhouette

An adult male can measure up to 1.50 m at the shoulder and weigh between 200 and 600 kg on average, although some exceptionally massive individuals, particularly in Alaska or on Kodiak Island, can exceed 1,000 kg, reaching in rare cases up to 1,500 kg during periods of heavy weight gain. The brown bear is distinguished by its massive silhouette, its slightly humped back, its powerful clawed paws and its large head with an elongated muzzle. Its coat, whose color varies from light blonde to dark brown, protects it effectively from cold and bad weather.

An emblematic animal

An opportunistic omnivore, the brown bear has a very varied diet. It consumes both plants (berries, roots, grasses) and animal proteins (insects, small mammals, carrion, fish). This dietary flexibility allows it to adapt to many environments, including those of zoos where it benefits from a balanced and enriched diet, in line with its nutritional and behavioral needs.

The brown bear is generally solitary, except during the breeding season or when the female is raising her young. In captivity, social interactions are monitored and supervised to ensure the well-being of each individual, while promoting the expression of natural behaviors such as foraging, bathing or hibernation.

An emblematic animal of temperate forests, the brown bear inspires both respect and fascination. Its presence in Seine-et-Marne, in a natural and adapted setting, allows the public to better understand its crucial role in ecosystems, while addressing the challenges of coexistence between humans and large wild fauna in Europe.
