Black panther
The black panther is not a distinct species, but a designation for felines displaying black coloration due to a phenomenon called melanism, a genetic mutation that causes overproduction of dark pigments in the coat. This phenotype can be found in different species of felines, mainly in the leopard in Asia and Africa, as well as in the jaguar in South America.
Size and weight
They are recognizable by their uniform coat of deep black which, under intense light, sometimes reveals rosette patterns characteristic of their species of origin. These felines generally measure between 1.2 and 1.9 meters, tail included, and can weigh from 30 to 90 kg, depending on their species and sex. Despite their uniform appearance, they possess the same slender and muscular morphology as their non-melanic counterparts.
Habitat and distribution
These felines are opportunistic predators and strict carnivores, hunting a wide variety of prey depending on their habitat: antelopes, monkeys, birds, small mammals or even reptiles. Their ability to climb trees and their exceptional discretion allow them to hunt effectively and store their prey out of reach of scavengers. Black coloration offers an advantage in dense forests or poorly lit areas, where they blend better into their environment.
Habitat and distribution
Black panthers live in a diversity of habitats, mainly in the dense tropical forests of Southeast Asia (in the black leopard) and Central and South America (in the black jaguar). They can also be found in wooded savannas or mountainous areas, although this is less frequent. Like their congeners, black panthers are solitary and territorial, with home ranges marked by scratches, urine and vocalizations.
Conservation and threats
They are not directly threatened as a phenotype, but their survival is linked to that of leopards and jaguars, both facing significant threats such as deforestation, illegal hunting and conflicts with humans. These pressures reduce their populations and fragment their habitats, making their conservation crucial.
