Patas

The Patas, also called red monkey or hussar monkey, belongs to the Cercopithecidae family.

Patas
Scientific name Erythrocebus patas
Diet Omnivore
Distribution Africa
Habitat Savannas, Semi-arid zones

Physical description

This primate is easily recognizable by its short coat of reddish-ochre color, which earned it the nickname “red monkey”. Its black face is framed by white hair around the mouth and on the sides, while the top of its head is topped with brown-gray hair forming a kind of cap. Its long and slender limbs, particularly its hind legs, are adapted for rapid running on the ground.

Size and weight

The Patas is one of the fastest monkeys, capable of running at over 55 km/h, an ability that allows it to quickly escape predators in the vast savannas it inhabits. Males, larger than females, can measure up to 85 cm long and weigh about 12 kg, while females reach 60 cm and weigh around 6 kg.

Behavior and reproduction

This monkey lives in the savannas and semi-arid zones of West and East Africa, where it forms social groups composed of a single adult male and several females with their young. Young males leave the group at maturity to lead a solitary life or join bachelor groups.

Diet

The Patas is omnivorous and feeds mainly on fruits, seeds, acacia gum, as well as insects. Its ability to adapt to arid environments and exploit varied resources is remarkable.

Habitat and distribution

Although the Patas is not currently endangered, the loss of its habitat due to human expansion and intensive agriculture represent a growing threat to its population.
