Carnivores

Arctic Wolves

The Arctic wolf is a subspecies of the gray wolf, perfectly adapted to the extreme conditions of the northernmost regions of Canada and Greenland. Its immaculate white coat, dense and thick, effectively protects it against polar cold and allows it to blend into snowy landscapes. But despite its Arctic origins, this robust canid can also adapt without difficulty to milder climates, such as that of Seine-et-Marne, provided it benefits from a habitat designed for its thermal comfort and behavioral needs.

Arctic Wolves
Scientific name Canis lupus arctos
Diet Carnivore
Distribution Arctic Canada, Greenland
Habitat Arctic tundra, polar regions

Size and weight

Smaller than its cousin from boreal forests, the Arctic wolf measures approximately 85 cm at the shoulder and weighs between 35 and 60 kg. It is characterized by a compact build, rounded ears and a short muzzle, features that limit heat loss. Its winter coat is particularly insulating, allowing it to withstand temperatures dropping well below -40 °C in its native environment.

Diet

Carnivorous, the Arctic wolf feeds mainly on caribou, Arctic hares and other prey available on the tundra. In an animal park, its diet is adapted to its energy needs, with a balanced diet based on raw meat, supplemented by food enrichment.

Behavior and reproduction

A social animal, it lives in a pack structured around a dominant pair, and cooperation within the group is essential for hunting, raising young and protecting territory. In a zoological setting, these social bonds are respected and strengthened by careful monitoring and facilities that encourage the expression of their natural behaviors.

Conservation and threats

Silent and wary, this discreet wolf is a valuable ambassador for raising awareness about northern biodiversity. Its presence in Seine-et-Marne, in an environment respectful of its well-being, offers the public a unique opportunity to discover this fascinating species while highlighting the issues related to climate change and the conservation of large carnivores.
