Blue Macaw
The blue macaw, also called ara ararauna, is a large parrot easily recognizable by the yellow and blue colors of its plumage. It measures approximately 90 cm long and weighs approximately 1.3 kg. Native to the Amazon basin, Guyana, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, it lives in forests, savannas, open areas, marshes and waterside areas where it feeds on fruits, seeds and nuts.
Conservation and threats
This bird is protected by the Washington Convention (Annex II) and the ministerial decree of May 15, 1986 listing protected bird species in Guyana.
