Size and weight
The pigeon measures approximately 30 to 35 cm in length with a wingspan of 60 to 70 cm and an average weight of 200 to 400 grams. Its plumage is generally blue-grey, with iridescent green and purple reflections on the neck. Its wings have two characteristic black bands, while its tail is bordered by a dark line. However, due to crossbreeding with domestic pigeons, a great diversity of colors is observed in urban populations, ranging from white to brown through black.
Presentation
Endowed with an excellent sense of orientation, the pigeon is famous for its ability to return to its place of origin, even when displaced hundreds of kilometers away. This aptitude was exploited by humans for the transport of messages for centuries, notably during wars, where the carrier pigeon played a crucial role.
